Course Description:This training class incorporates the planning, design, construction and operation of a state-of-the-art dissolved air flotation (DAF) water treatment facility in Connecticut. Course topics will include an explanation of the project purpose with a description of the prior facility’s antiquated perifilter clarification/filtration treatment process. The presentation will include descriptions of the source water and environmental and hydrologic considerations associated with increasing capacity of the new facility. A major component of the course will be the methodologies applied for process treatment selection during the design phase. Fundamental coagulation chemistry and flocculation processes will be covered including considerations and pilot projects for selection of optimal coagulant type. Similarly, the course will cover sedimentation and clarification processes in reasonable depth, with explanations for when and why DAF is a suitable technology. Filtration and filter media selection including a focus on granular activated carbon performance will be presented. Corrosion control treatment and final stabilization will also be covered with particular emphasis on impacts within the distribution system and Lead and Copper Rule compliance. Presenters will also discuss improvements to residuals handling as well. Finally, the course will discuss the project delivery (i.e. construction) phase. Alternative project delivery methodologies will be introduced with an emphasis on comparing the two primary modes in the water industry - design-bid-build vs. design-build. An example of the project delivery methodology employed for the Rockville Water Treatment Facility will be presented highlighting the major benefits and lessons learned.
