Course Code: Spring 1802
Date: Tuesday, April 24, 2018
Location: Regional Water Authority, 90 Sargent Dive, New Haven
Time: 9:00am-12:00pm                                                                                                       TCH: 3 Applicable Treatment (T) (Application Pending)

A three hour seminar on the use and application of SCADA for drinking water treatment is being offered.  The seminar will cover an introductory review of the components of a SCADA system (field instruments, computer hardware, software, etc.), the common acronyms used when describing SCADA systems, and how the devices are installed and communicate to provide data acquisition and control of common drinking water treatment instruments and equipment.  The seminar will review the practical application of SCADA systems for a Typical Water Treatment Plant, and some of the things that need to be reviewed and validated in order to have confidence in the data that is obtained.  In particular, the seminar will review one of the most common on-line instruments for monitoring water quality (turbidimeter) and discuss how the instruments work and some recent advances in the technology.  The seminar will end with a general discussion of data integrity and how it relates to regulatory compliance.  A data integrity case study will be reviewed.

Learning Objectives:

1)      Review and discuss the common components of a SCADA system, how they are all connected and work together to provide information and the control of equipment.

2)      How to interpret SCADA data from instruments and devices to make process control decisions and prevent process issues before they occur.

3)      Explain how an on-line turbidimeter works and some recent advances in the technology.

4)      The importance of calibrating instrumentation to provide valid data.
