Interactive Operator Training Planned by the Education & Program Committee

The training starts with a guided tour of the Bristol Water Department's Class IV Surface Water Treatment Plant, which will be covering treatment from raw to finished water. The plant uses conventional treatment including coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation and filtration to provide up to 10 million gallons per day to the City’s water system. Chemical treatment, SCADA, and on-site laboratory analysis will be covered throughout the tour.

Followed by 30-minute learning stations:

Confined Space/Fall Protection Review- Mike Witek, CT Water, CTAWWA Safety Committee Chair

This training will focus on Confined Space Entry and Fall Protection. Permit-required procedures from pre-entry to exit, along with equipment selection and inspection, will be covered. A display of equipment used for a variety of entries will be available to view.

Colorimetric Chlorine Chemistry and Proper Use of Chlorine Residual Instruments- Greg Tirelli & Amy Pollock, Hach

Overview of chlorine and colorimetric chemistry with verification and calibration tools. Blunders, Mishaps, and whoops. What not to do. In this hands-on training session, participants will receive step-by-step instructions on how to effectively operate a portable field instrument for chlorine analysis. The training will cover the entire chlorine testing process, from sample preparation to the final analysis, ensuring accurate results every time. Attendees will also learn essential testing best practices, focusing on the importance of precision and consistency. Basic maintenance and troubleshooting will be demonstrated to ensure the instrument functions optimally in the field. The session will dive into the principles of colorimetric chlorine chemistry, explaining how to properly use chlorine residual instruments, along with verification and calibration tools. Common blunders and mishaps will be discussed, providing participants with insights into what not to do to avoid mistakes in the testing process.

Understanding Common Metering Pump Technologies- Danny Smith, Ti-Sales

In this visual demonstration of multiple pump technologies used in metering chemicals in the municipal market, we will showcase single diaphragm, double diaphragm, peristaltic, and other technologies. We will have a working cutaway of a solenoid pump, a hands-on demonstration of a double diaphragm pump, and an opportunity for participants to change a tubing in a solenoid pump.

The final presentation of the day will be:

What Does DPH Look For In a Sanitary Survey?-Vicky Carrier & Alex Tabatabai, CT DPH Drinking Water Section

This presentation will focus on what the Drinking Water Section looks for in a sanitary survey.  Though it would briefly touch on all 8 elements (sources of supply, treatment, distribution, storage, pumping facilities, monitoring/reporting and data verification, system management/operation, and operator compliance) of a sanitary survey, given the location (a surface water treatment plant), it will especially emphasize what the DPH DWS engineers look for at surface water filter plants/reservoirs.
